1minute Projection Mapping Competition / TOKYO LIGHTS 2022総評

1minute Projection Mapping Competition / TOKYO LIGHTS 2022 General Comments

2022.9.27

The festival was first held in 2021 at a new venue in Tokyo, and this year's second edition was held only on the first day due to a typhoon. We are very sorry to the creators who participated in the festival and to everyone who came to the festival and looked forward to the screenings and festivities, and everyone involved regrets this. The theme for this year's contest was "LIFE," and it was a theme that made us think hard in light of the current trends of the times. The works submitted to the contest were filled with the creators' thoughts, feelings, and messages. The audience, the judges, and the finalists were deeply moved by these works, which seemed to embody the diverse and changing values of the times. The technical level of the contents was also very high, and it was very exciting to see the transitional period in which the expression of projection mapping is expanding and deepening. The deliberations by the eight judges were even more heated than usual, with lengthy discussions taking place. All of the finalists were excellent, and it was very difficult to score, evaluate, and rank them, but we have compiled a brief introduction of the award-winning works and their evaluation points on behalf of the jury. GRAND PRIZE (Governor of Tokyo Award):Title of work: [Elemental constructions] EPER DIGITAL (Hungary) The GRAND PRIZE (Governor of Tokyo Award) was awarded to "Elemental constructions" by EPER DIGITAL (Hungary). This work was different compared to conventional projection mapping, and left a fresh surprise and a strong impression on many people. Synchronized with music, the simple expression using primary colors of red, blue, and yellow and 3DCG kept the audience's hearts dancing and strongly attracted them. The simple colors and shapes gradually blended together, and it seemed as if diverse values were gradually melting together to form a single worldview. The jury members exchanged various opinions about the weak presentation of the theme, "LIFE. In the end, the work was highly evaluated for its fresh and complete expression, which touched many people's hearts and made them feel the theme in its abstraction. SECOND PRIZE (TOKYO LIGHTS Award): Title of work [Owari (end) ・Tsuzuku (continuation)] DecideKit (Thailand) Owari (End) ・Tsuzuku (Continued)" by DecideKit (Thailand), which won the SECOND PRIZE (TOKYO LIGHTS Award) and the Audience Award. This work was highly acclaimed for its clear thematic storyline and its skilled filmmaking techniques and composition. The entire building became a cocoon of life, and the way it hatched and flapped its wings was so beautiful that it slowly seeped into the viewer's hearts. JURY PRIZE (Special Jury Prize): Title of work [Mutate / Evolve] RESORB (Germany) The Jury's Special Prize went to "Mutate / Evolve," a work by RESORB (Germany) that depicted life forms generated by AI algorithms, which seemed to have mutated, but were also designed to blend in with the building. Although technically the work used AI technology, which is still in its transitional stage of expression, the intricately intertwined and transparent visuals evoked the vividness and strength of life, and seemed to hint at the current era. Tokyo Tokyo PRIZE (Tokyo Tokyo Prize): Title: [Resistance] Kurbas Production (Ukraine) Finally, the Tokyo Tokyo PRIZE (Tokyo Tokyo Award) went to Kurbas Production (Ukraine) for "Resistance. The film depicts the heavy theme of this year's competition in a soft, objective manner, not as a criticism of the environment in which the filmmakers were placed, but with a high level of skill and a unique worldview. The work also struck a chord with the audience and the jury for its attempt to convey its own existence in a work that confronts the current era head-on. These are the critiques of the winners, but there were many other works that received high evaluations, and it was difficult to choose one over the other. We received entries from 55 countries and regions this year, and I felt that the competition of visual expressions that transcended national borders and positions was like an act of expanding the world's awareness, then reorganizing it from a bird's eye view, and slowly condensing it. I felt that diverse values, sometimes similar, sometimes different, but changing their forms, exist in the world, and that the time to know and recognize them is very precious. Finally, as I have said every time, this competition is supported by the creators' motivation to participate and their works. In order to reward the creators for their thoughts and time, we intend to create a convention where both creators and spectators can exchange positive energy, and a place that is attractive to all expressive people. All of us involved are looking forward to further growth together with you, and we appreciate your continued cooperation and participation. We would like to express our deepest gratitude once again to all the participating creators and all those who cooperated with us. 1minute Projection Mapping Competition General Producer Michiyuki Ishida

1minute Projection Mapping in TOKYO 大会総評

1minute Projection Mapping in TOKYO

2021.12.27

The 9th edition of the "1 Minute Projection Mapping Competition," which was held in Tokyo for the first time after a one-year postponement due to the new Corona, attracted a great deal of attention. This tournament, which started with 5 countries, has now grown to receive 246 entries from 54 countries and regions. I am very happy that the participants are highly motivated to participate, and at the same time, I feel a great sense of responsibility. This competition is a place for creators to output their own expressions, and I was also reminded of the importance of creating such a place. Creators' perspectives, ideas, and what they want to express essentially represent what people want to say and the times they live in, and through these opportunities, their ideas are directly conveyed to people and evoke emotion. The value of the time spent experiencing these creators and the expression they bring to the table is increasing and becoming more and more indispensable. The world is currently divided by the spread of the coronavirus. This competition should have been held in the same place where the international judges and finalists would have gathered to share the same time together. However, this time, we were able to hold the competition while connecting online, and on the other hand, we were able to feel the passion and temperature of the competition, which was as great as the distance between the world and the creators, making it a very valuable opportunity for us. Through the "1 Minute Projection Mapping Competition" and "TOKYO LIGHTS," we would like to continue to provide opportunities for such connections in the future. Now, the festival was held on a large scale in Tokyo, the capital of Japan, in conjunction with the Festival of Light, and attracted a record number of entries and a very high quality group of works. Both as a competition and as a projection mapping show, it was more substantial than ever before. The theme of the competition was "HOPE," and this year's competition provided an opportunity for creators from all over the world to think about, express, and communicate the word "hope," and I felt that each work carried more of the creator's "personality" and "feelings" than in previous years. Even at the stage of the selection process to choose the finalists, it was a very difficult task to have to narrow down the field. We would have screened more films if we could have, but I believe that the jury selected the films that gave us a stronger sense of this feeling of "hope" and energy. The Seitoku Memorial Picture Gallery, which was used as a screen, is a beautiful building with a long history and is also a valuable Japanese cultural asset. To make the most of this architecture and space is a task that requires a great deal of experience and imagination. However, this experience can sometimes be a barrier to imagination. In this competition, experienced creators are required to break out of their shells, and young creators are challenged to come up with bold ideas that do not rely on experience. Creators are encouraged to go beyond the barriers of "what it should be like," and the works that struck a chord with the judges were awarded the Grand Prix and other prizes. Grand Prix and Audience Award: "THROUGH THE NIGHT" by THE FOX, THE FOLKS (Indonesia) The work of "THE FOX, THE FOLKS," which won the Grand Prix and Audience Award this year, showed creativity and a sense of freshness. The scene that quickly brightened up like the rising sun after the dark night expressed in monotone illustrations brought warmth to many people's hearts. The layout, cut and split, transitions, etc., were all done with a sense of precision, making use of the architectural shapes to create a single scene that is a picture in its own right. Video: https://youtu.be/fe_VTGNhbS8 Runner-up: "Alegria" Romera Diseño e infografia SL (Los Romeras)(Spain)The runner-up, "Los Romeras," was a simple and powerful work with Spanish folk music as its main subject. While focusing on the colors of red and white, all scenes were carefully crafted to the rhythm and intonation of the music, and were very pleasant and exhilarating, as if running through to the finale. The work also conveyed the passion that "hope is the energy of people's joy and enjoyment," and captivated many people at the venue. Video: https://youtu.be/Bs7fLAtrDnQ Jury Prize: "Arco Iris" by Felix Frank (Germany) The work by Felix Frank of Germany, which won the Jury Prize, was a quiet and moving work that carefully constructed a simple and beautiful world. After a simple introduction starting with a piano melody, the spatiality of the stringed instruments gradually expanded into a swelling sound that entered the viewer's mind. It was a strange and beautiful work that brought about an experience as if one were to melt into the starry sky one looked up at and assimilate oneself into the universe, and as the minute dots of light shining in the dark moved, one felt the delicate yet cosmic scale of the work. Video: https://youtu.be/1NU5PF276Ug Tokyo Tokyo Prize: "Jidainote Hands of New Age" 01iMAGE / Noguchi Kazunobu (Japan) The work of "01iMAGE/Noguchi Kazunobu", winner of the Tokyo Tokyo Prize, was fun and calculated, with a nice rhythm and changes with music. The work was fun and well calculated with music, with a nice rhythm and changes. Although the projection mapping was a bit lacking, the motion graphic design, pleasant movements, vivid colors, and straightforward presentation attracted the audience and proved to be very popular. Video: https://youtu.be/5O7RWy-2GMY The non-winning entries were also truly outstanding, and the judges wanted to pick more, which was very distressing in itself to have to narrow it down to only five awards, and a credit to the finalists for being recognized as great works in their own right. In the end, it was the creators' willingness to take on challenges, more than the technical aspects, that resulted in the adoption of the awards, and I believe that this will be a guiding principle for future competitions as well, and will be the key to the direction that is most sought after by creators in these competitions. In conclusion, we would like to express our sincere appreciation to the many people involved in organizing this event, to all those who came to the event, to the local community, and most of all to the creators who participated in the event. 1minute Projection Mapping Competition General Producer Michiyuki Ishida
