Guest Creators

Eudaimonia |AVA Animation & Visual Arts (Canada)

"Eudaimonia" is a word meaning happiness. In this world, we are all connected, and every action has a reaction. All humans, plants, and animals have purpose, and we all depend on and influence each other in invisible ways. We imagine these invisible connections and express their mechanisms as a complex puzzle, like dominoes. We visualized how good actions trigger positive, captivating chain reactions, how happiness spreads like an infection, and how it gradually changes the world's colors.

reshape | László Zsolt Bordos (Hungary)

This "reshape" represents the potential to alter a building's appearance by projecting images onto it. Using projector light, the images can virtually reshape the structure, altering how the building is perceived and experienced through projection, bringing new interpretations and contexts. Just as light transforms space, this work expresses the transformation of architecture through imagery. To enhance this experience, it synchronizes sound and animation, stimulating both auditory and visual senses simultaneously.

extra prize

Prize Plate

The prize plate for the 1minute Projection Mapping Competition is a special plate, a symbol of the competition's honor, obtainable only by a very select few. It is meticulously crafted each time to embody the value befitting such a prestigious award.

This year, the traditional glass craft technique "Edo Kiriko," recognized as both a Tokyo Metropolitan Traditional Craft and a Nationally Designated Traditional Craft, was adopted. Its production was handled by Mr. Tetsu Horiguchi, the third-generation master craftsman of "Horiguchi Kiriko," who carries on the tradition and prestige of manufacturing and selling Edo Kiriko.
The intricate patterns carry meaning: the 'Kiku Tsunagi Mon' and 'Kikuka Mon' patterns, derived from 'Kiku = Kiku' (chrysanthemum = joy), express the wish for joy to endure and connect forever; the 'Asanoha Mon' pattern symbolizes the wish for growth as straight, swift, and strong as hemp; and the 'Hakkaku Kagome Mon' pattern, with its shape said to draw good fortune from all eight directions, embodies the wish to hold happiness within.

extra prize

For the 2023 competition, Barco Corporation, a pioneer in projector manufacturing, sponsored the Grand Prix supplementary prize with its latest single-chip laser projector, the “Barco G50 Series DLP Laser Projectors.” This model, selected as Best of Show at “InfoComm”—America's largest audiovisual trade show held this past June—embodies the vision of President and CEO Hironori Kato: "to further expand the scope of moving experiences through mapping," "to support creators producing mapping content worldwide," and "to make the '1minute Projection Mapping Competition' a globally appealing mapping event."

Additionally, in addition to the prize plate and cash prize, all winners of the Grand Prix and the other five awards will receive a set from garageCube consisting of MadMapper—specialized projection mapping software—and its extension MadLaser, which enables laser mapping using a laser projector (each with a one-year license).

This supplementary prize supports the exploration of further possibilities for creators and the expansion of their opportunities for activity.

The 11th 1minute Projection Mapping Competition was held as part of TOKYO LIGHTS 2023.
